In order to facilitate the move into another area of the
quarry and provide a new safe haul road crossing point
for heavy plant, it was necessary to construct a new conveyor
and brook crossing under an existing private access.
To maintain the existing private right of way a temporary
access road and brook crossing was constructed, White
Horse Contractors' equipment was then able to start
removing the old structure.
The preparation of the area involved large scale earth
works, allowing the new culverts to be installed with
the least amount of disruption. Temporary alterations
were also made to the area to facilitate the placing
of lifting equipment correctly. As each culvert weighed
7-tonnes and 11 new sections had to be positioned, organisation
and safety were major considerations for the project
managers and operatives.
Large earth bunds were constructed to lessen the impact
of the quarry workings and the area around the new culverts
was reshaped and top soiled, ready for further soft
landscaping by the client.
Working within this sensitive area presented many challenges
all of which received individual consideration. The project has been a success, the residents now have
a safe access road and the quarry can continue to develop.
