White Horse Contractors were instructed to make modifications to the River Ray stream/drainage ditch running through Swindon to help control the flow of water and help improve the state of naturally occurring wildlife areas.
This project comprised:
- Removal of retaining walls in some areas to improve river movement
- Installation of minor meanders to enable:
- Flow change
- Erosion/deposition zones
- Direction changes
- Installation of riffles within stream base to:
- Hold back water to high side to help provide slack areas for fish spawning
- Increase speed and water movement over and below the riffles
- Installation of hazel spilling and faggots to provide habitat improvements and protect the new channel from excessive erosion
- Lower existing flood plain area to provide:
- Flood plain ponds
- Wetland areas away from the main stream
- Increase floral habitat areas
- Increase bird breeding areas
