Stratfield Mortimer

Three flood alleviation bunds totalling 600 lin m were constructed in order to hold back water from the West End Brook during high water flows. The bunds were constructed on a combination of agricultural fields and highway verges. They were sited within the village to ensure that agricultural grassland flooded when the Brook banks burst, rather than over spilling onto the roads and into the local properties.

Imported puddling clay was used to form the bunds, which was then covered with topsoil and a preseeded biodegradable straw based mat. Laser grading excavators were used ensure that the bunds were constructed to the high level of accuracy required to form the desired profiles.
