Olympic Park River Lea
Re-Modelling Works

Working to a tight program with an immoveable completion date, White Horse Contractors (WHC) have undertaken the restoration and landscaping of the East Bank of the River Lea, running through the centre of the 2012 Olympic Park.

The area was home to polluting industries such as petrol factories, and even a vast Victorian rubbish tip but the area was not ecologically "dead", 2,000 newts and hundreds of toads were relocated away from the future park even before the first diggers moved in.  The badly-polluted river had already been scoured and cleaned with soil removed and taken to be cleaned at a "soil hospital" on the site. Plenty of vintage rubbish has emerged along the way.

The extensive works have involved decontamination of the site; creation of wetlands that included hazel spilling, coir log installation and the planting of over 10,000m² of pre-grown aquatic plant stock; the construction of large cast in-situ concrete bridges/culverts, outlet headwalls and pipework; three frog ponds and two wet-woodlands; construction of reinforced river banks under 2No. bridges; and the growing and installation of 3800m² reinforced wild flower turf; importing something in the order of 3,500 trees and 36,500 herbaceous shrubs

With over 11,000 people working throughout the Olympic Park, it made for exceptionally difficult logistical conditions.  To ease traffic congestion locally, and to improve our program, we imported considerable quantities of materials with the use of the railway, which allowed trains to deliver right into the Park.
