Works began in mid-June, after the earthworks to
form various plateaus had been completed. White Horse
Contractors installed some 16,000m of drainage pipe to
the pitch areas. The rootzone pitches had grit slits added
at 750mm outers, prior to the placing of imported sand/soil
growing medium.
Once drainage was complete, a comprehensive automatic
irrigation system was installed with close-space 'pop-sprinklers'
on the rootzone areas and hose points for temporary
sprinklers in the sand-ameliorated topsoil areas
Following installation of the irrigation system, approximately
17,000 tones of rootzone and sand were imported, spread
to level and laser graded.
The 7.5ha of ground was prepared and seeded, and the
new training academy was ready for pre-season training.
" The early inclusion of White Horse Contractors
in the design and build team ensured that the design
of the drainage and irrigation systems were cost effective.
Working closely with the main contractor, the construction
was completed to programme. The resulting ten pitches
of various sizes are now in use and proving to be very
satisfactory." A J Burns, Project Manager, Derby County Football
