Case Study: Nottingham University artificial sports pitch construction

Project: Construction of artificial turf pitch and play areas.

Client: Nottingham Academies.

Contract Supervisors: White Horse Contractors Ltd.

Contract Value: £376K.

White Horse Contractors (Northern) Ltd were appointed to construct a new artificial turf pitch for
football & hockey use to be part of a scheme that included several other macadam surfaced MUGAs
for tennis and netball use, on a site adjacent to the new school building.

After discussion with the school regarding school sports to be played, WHC(N) proposed that the
40m x 25m ATP should be a 24mm pile sand-filled surface to meet the requirement of being suitable
for football and hockey.

The underlying soils at the site were inherently unstable with high moisture content sub soils being
encountered. Design for the sub base construction and for flood light column bases had to allow for
spreading and supporting the load that would be installed.
The formation required to be bolstered with geogrid prior to spreading the 250mm of stone for the
sub base. The construction of the ATP allowed for a macadam base with a 15mm shock pad below
the carpet.

WHC (N) completed construction within a 12 week period.
This included all lighting, drainage and sports fencing. For further information on this, see our artificial turf services.
