NEWS: Hybrid pitch construction underway at Whitgift

19th Aug 2021

Following mobilisation onto the independent school site, White Horse Contractors have commenced earthworks and sports drainage for two new hybrid pitch installations.

Preparing for a proven surface

With increasing demand for their onsite pitches at the day and boarding school for 1500 boys, Whitgift appointed White Horse Contractors to construct a hybrid solution to maximise their sports surface utilisation. Upon completion, the school will benefit from a new full-size rugby pitch, junior rugby pitch and playground that will maximise playing time for students.

Working as part of the project team, lead contractors White Horse Contractors, highly-skilled sports consultants TGMS and Daniel Ratling (Grounds and Estate Manager, Whitgift) worked collaboratively to finalise a design solution that ensures the school’s needs will be met when it comes to maximising space for students on the existing site.

Particular care and attention will be paid on-site to the surrounding wildlife, ensuring minimal disruption to Whitgift’s resident flamingos and peacocks. Our team will operate the plant and machinery with the technical skill and consideration required to prepare the ground, ready for the industry-leading hybrid surface to be installed.

A win for Whitgift

Our drainage division has begun trenching across the full-size rugby pitch. Using our new Mastenbroek 20/15 trencher with a sports field conveyor system and Trimble® GPS technology to ensure the precise installation of the new drainage system.

With an extensive drainage installation underneath the new stitched hybrid surface, Whitgift will benefit from longer playing times for their students in the future.

Contracts Manager on the project, Colin McBeth:

“We’re extremely pleased with the process so far.

The team are pushing on and we have taken advantage of the good weather to install drainage slightly earlier than scheduled. Both the full-size and junior pitch will have full primary and secondary sports drainage installed, meaning once the hybrid installation is complete, both will drain effectively through all weather.”

Next steps

Following the drainage works, specially selected materials are spread, to form the upper and lower rootzones in preparation for GrassMaster Solutions hybrid installation.

In weeks to come, our world-renowned hybrid turf partners will mobilise to the site with their new Gen-S machine to install their proven hybrid system.
